Mikao Usui developed five principles to live by called Gokai.

Just for Today ~ Kyo dake wa

Do not be angry   ~ Ikaruna
Do not be worried ~ Shin pai suna
Be grateful ~ Kan sha shite
Do your duties fully ~ Gyo-o hageme
Be kind to others ~ Hito ni shinsetsu ni

The whole traditional basis and philosophy of Reiki is to follow the Gokai, it is a lifelong practice but intended to be taken day by day, just as the first line teaches ‘just for today’.  Although only a few simple words these principles have deep significance for Reiki practitioners and are repeated three times in Japanese each morning and evening.   They could be looked upon in a similar way to saying affirmations which are well used and extremely effective in the wellbeing sector.

Obviously, we all feel the emotions of anger or worry at various times as we navigate our way through life but we can help ourselves by changing our mindset. Gratitude plays such an important part as when we can focus on what we are grateful for our hearts open up to feeling more positive emotions. With positive emotion and thoughts, we can then learn to try and override negative situations using self-compassion, compassion for others and again gratitude.

We can grow and learn a great deal about ourselves when we put our focus and energy into our everyday responsibilities / obligations whether at home or work.  We do not have to achieve everything on our ‘to do list’ but completing all we can do with intention and a positive attitude helps to put ourselves in the driving seat of our own life.

Kindness is infectious!   It is no secret that when you show kindness to others, they are often encouraged to help others causing a ripple effect and making our world a much better place to live in.

We all encounter difficult periods during our lifetimes, some of which can be extremely challenging and trying to follow Gokai could potentially seem near impossible to achieve but in very simple terms…

Gokai is a powerful opportunity to start over each day, living it in a way to the best of your abilities.

" When we can focus on what we are grateful for our hearts open up to feeling more positive emotions."
